SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM OF FIRST LADY AND VICE GOV. ANNE GORDON

Olongapo City First Lady and Zambales Vice Gov. Anne Gordon has invigorated her Scholarship Program for the youth in the first district of Zambales which includes the municipalities of Olongapo, Subic, Castillejos and San Marcelino.

At the “Kalinga Community for Children ‘Bingo Bonggah-Anne’ Panalo Ka Bayan” held at Plaza Dos in Brgy. Barretto on April 12, 2010, FL Anne Gordon announced the good news to all who are interested to be part of her Scholarship Program.

‘’Ang kaka-iba sa aking Scholarship Program ay hindi kinakailangan na ang mga bata ay lalapit sa akin taon-taon kundi sa loob ng apat (4) na taon na sila ay aking scholars ay dalawang (2) beses lamang kami magkikita. Una, kapag sila ay papasok sa unang taon at ang ikalawa naman ay kapag sila ay ga-graduate na sa kolehiyo,’’ said FL Anne who is currently running for congress.

‘’Kinakailangan lamang na maganda ang performance ng aking mga scholars, kailangan na maganda ang kanilang grado sa school upang sa gayo’y hindi mawala sa kanila ang prebilihiyo na maging ‘Scholar ng Bayan’,’’ she added.

‘’Noong isang araw ay merong lumapit sa akin na isang scholar ng aking katungggali at nag-tanong kung ano ang aking gagawin kung sakaling ako ang mananalo sa halalan sa May 10. Nais kong ipa-alam sa inyo na hindi mawawala sa inyo ang inyong scholarship at aking ipagpapatuloy ito dahil hindi dapat kayo isinasali sa pulitika dahil ang ginagamit na pera ay hindi naman buhat sa bulsa ng congresswoman bagkus ‘yan ay buhat sa bulsa ng bawat isang mamamayan kaya wala kayong utang na loob sa congresswoman,’’ FL Anne Gordon said with conviction.

It can be recalled part of the funds raised by the 2009 City Executive Committee under the Chairmanship of FL Anne was allotted to the Scholarship Program of City Mayor James “Bong” Gordon, Jr. on top of funds for the city’s Health and Livelihood Programs.

‘’Higit ko pang daragdagan ang bilang ng mga scholars upang sa gayo’y hindi kailanman magiging hadlang ang kahirapan upang makamit ang panaginip na makapag-tapos ng pag-aaral dahil naniniwala rin ako na ang edukasyon ay isa sa mga sagot sa kahirapan,’’ FL Anne Gordon concluded.

SKILLS FOR EMPLOYMENT, SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM FOR OFW DEPENDENTS

Immediate dependents of active Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) members will have more opportunities to educational assistance with the Skill-for-Employment Scholarship Program or SESP for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) dependents.

An unmarried brother or sister aged 21 and below of unmarried OFWs and spouse or child below 21 years of age of married OFW, who is at least elementary graduate and is a Filipino citizen can apply to this scholarship,” according to Public Employment Service Office head, Evelyn delos Santos.

Qualified SESP scholars may avail of any identified in-demand technical-vocational (tech-voc) programs not exceeding 1 year in duration. However, a scholar may be allowed to enroll in a 2-year vocational course providing that OWWAs financial assistance will only be limited to a maximum of P14, 500, both for a 2-year or one year tech-voc courses.

Among the courses that a qualified applicant may choose from are the following:

1. Caregiver, Medical Transcriptionist course or other

related courses to health, social and community services.

2. Machine/Lather Operator

3.All technician/Mechanic/Electrical and electronic courses

4. Information Technology courses (IT):

Software/Computer Programmer, Personal Computer

(PC) Operation and PC Technician

5. Tourism and Hotel Management Courses such as

Housekeeping Course, Food and Beverage Service,

Commercial Cooking, Baking/Pastry Production, Front

Office Service and Bartending

SESP scholars may enroll to any OWWA partner institutions such as Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) or any accredited OWWA schools or institutions.

As of today, deserving Olongapeño OFW dependents have already received the financial assistance from SESP and are enrolled in different learning institutions in the city.

Interested applicants may visit the Olongapo City PESO at the ground floor of Olongapo City Hall for referrals and documentary requirements.

BACCALAUREATE SCHOLARSHIP FOR OFW DEPENDENTS

“ Because the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW’s) are our modern-day heroes, bringing in dollar revenues that elevate the economic status of the nation and sacrificing and working hard to fend for their families, their dependents deserve no less than the best assistance the government could provide,” said Mayor James Gordon Jr. in connection with the EDSP project of Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

The EDSP or Education for Development Scholarship Program is a financial subsidy for the immediate dependents of active OFW’s who intend to pursue courses leading to baccalaureate degrees or four-year courses. Scholarship privileges include allowance and tuition and other school fees amounting to P 30,000.00.

Possible awardees will be selected on the basis of their performance in the National Examination administered by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-Science Education Institute.

Limited to one scholarship grant per OFW family, applicant must:

a. Be a child of an active OFW below 21 years of age

b. Be a Filipino citizen and with no pending application for citizenship in any country and does not have dual citizenship

c. Be of good moral character

d. Have not earned units in any post secondary/undergraduate course

e. Be a high graduate

f. Not be a recipient of any scholarship grant

Olongapo applicants will be referred by the Olongapo City Public Employment Service Office (PESO) to DOLE and deadline of submission of application and documentary requirements will be on August 31, 2009.

TEN STUDENTS BENEFIT FROM ALAY-LAKAD PROGRAM

‘’Alay-Lakad Foundation, Inc. Olongapo City Chapter is happy to announce that ten (10) Olongapeños has benefitted from the Alay-Lakad Scholarship program,’’ said City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) Head Gene Eclarino.

New beneficiaries of the foundation for school year 2009-2010 were all enrolled in Gordon College taking-up courses of their choice including Bachelor of Science in Accountancy, Education, Hotel and Restaurant Management (HRM) and Information Technology (IT).

Different activities initiated by City Mayor and Alay Lakad Board Director James “Bong” Gordon Jr. with various collaborating government agencies and non-government organizations have raised funds to provide financial assistance to the poor but deserving youth of the city who are in the tertiary level of education.

Likewise, to maintain quality scholars, the foundation has set standards for beneficiaries such as maintaining an average not lower than 85% or 2.0, present copy of final grades and accomplished documents as proof of enrollment every semester.

‘’Ang foundation ay nag-lalaan ng mahigit Sampung Libong Pisong financial assistance kada semester sa bawat scholar batay sa halaga ng kanilang enrollment fees. Naka-saad rin sa kasunduan na ang halagang nagastos ng foundation sa kanilang pag-aaral na kung sila ay may trabaho na ang makatulong naman sa ibang mga kabataan na qualified rin na maging scholar ng foundation,’’ CSWDO head added.

In selecting this year’s qualified scholars, the screening committee was composed of a five-man selection panel headed by 2008-2009 Alay-Lakad Executive Committee Chair Anne Marie Gordon, representatives from the Soroptomist International, Rotary Clubs, Department of Education (DepEd), Olongapo Business Club (OBC) and City Social Welfare and Development Office.

ALAY LAKAD PROMOTES PRO POOR PROGRAM IN OLONGAPO

‘’The Alay Lakad Foundation, Inc. provides scholarships to Olongapeños specifically those young adults who believe in the value of education,’’ said Alay Lakad Secretariat Fe De Paz in an interview at SBC-DWGO.

De Paz who is also a City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) Youth Service Provider added, ‘’Since the Alay Lakad scholarship program was conceived in Olongapo City thirteen (13) years ago, thirty-nine (39) scholars have already benefitted from the program. Isama pa natin ang kanilang mga kapatid at kamag-anakan na pinag-aral, pinapag-aral at pag-aaralin pa ng ating mga Alay-Lakad scholars.’’

This year’s lead agency is the Soroptomist International, chaired by Zambales Vice-Gov. and Olongapo First Lady Anne Marie Gordon who said that the Alay-Lakad scholarship program ‘’provides an example of an effective partnership between the government and the private sector in providing the out-of-school youth (OSY) and qualified beneficiaries with opportunities for a better life.’’

Aside from the Alay Lakad and donation boxes placed in different business establishments around the city, additional funds come from donations made by the Department of Education (Deped) personnel and PTCA members, government officials, barangays, civic organizations, business establishments and likewise from raffle tickets, t-shirt printing and social bingo.

Obtained funds from different Alay Lakad activities are channeled by the CSWDO into pro-poor projects like scholarships of beneficiaries, capability trainings and livelihood projects.

CITY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Mayor James “Bong” Gordon, Jr. believes in the importance of education, thus the city’s continuing scholarship program ensures that poor but deserving students are able to go to school.

“Patuloy na susuportahan ng Pamahalaang Lungsod ang pangangailangang pang-edukasyon ng ating mga kabataan. Let us give our youth a better chance in making their lives better by providing quality education,’’ said Mayor Gordon.

The program is open to underprivileged but worthy students from elementary, high school and college levels. To apply for the program and be among the “Scholars ng Bayan,’’ the following should be accomplished:

Additional requirement for incoming college students is to take and pass the entrance exam being conducted by Gordon College, where successful candidates can choose a two-year or four-year course of their choice.

UE entrance tests in Olongapo and Zambales

THE UNIVERSITY of the East (UE) will administer its college entrance tests from August to October to graduating high school students in Isabela and Zambales.

The tests will be conducted from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-3:30 p.m.:

Aug. 30, Olongapo City National High School, Olongapo City;

Sept. 6, Zambales National High School, Iba;

and Sept. 13, St. Joseph College, East Bajac-Bajac, Olongapo City.

Application forms are available at the guidance offices of the testing venues. Tests are also conducted at 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-3.30 p.m. from Monday to Saturday at the UE Manila and UE Caloocan Admission Offices.

Upang mapabilang sa educational privilege ng lungsod, kinakailangan rin na may mataas na grading general average ang aplikante.

Sa school year 2007-2008 ay umabot sa mahigit 1,133 ang ‘City Scholars’, kabilang na ang 355 elementary students, 255 high school students at 523 college students na tumanggap ng full scholarship sa ibat-ibang dalawang (2) taon at apat (4) na taong kurso sa Gordon College.
