OLONGAPO CITY SUPPORTS EARTH HOUR 2009
Olongapo City will join some 76 cities in 62 countries worldwide in switchingoff their lights for an hour on March 28, 2009 at 8:30pm to 9:30pm in what is called the Earth Hour.
Mayor James “Bong” Gordon, Jr. has expressed his commitment to this environmental campaign that addresses issues on global warming and is urging all Olongapeños to participate.
“The City of Olongapo will fully support Earth Hour 2009 and we are urging companies, non-governmental organizations and communities in the city to implement and promote more energy-saving practices and technologies,” said Gordon.
Earth Hour is a global initiative on climate change of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) together with the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Green Army Philippines Network. Since its start in 2007, Earth Hour continues to spread its positive message about the importance of energy saving.
According to the website www.earthhour.org, “This year’s Earth Hour aims to reach 1 billion people around the world in more than 1,000 cities involving business, government and the community in the world’s largest global action on climate change.”

“Turning the lights off is only a small act. Dito sa Olongapo, let us try to make a difference by making Earth Hour part of our daily lives,” Gordon enthused.
Tasks which are so simple such as turning off appliances when not in use and switching from light globes to energy efficient bulbs will all add up and contribute greatly to reduce energy consumption.
This year, Earth Hour Philippines aims to reach out to at least 10 million Filipinos.
