RP, US set exercises
A TOTAL of 2,000 members of the US Marine Corps are coming over to join their Filipino counterparts in a series of training exercises.
Lt. Col. Ariel Caculitan, spokesman for the Philippine Marines, said the joint war games, dubbed Philippine Bilateral Exercises (Philblex), would be held probably in October.
“It’s just like the Balikatan exercises,” Caculitan told reporters in Camp Aguinaldo. “The objective is to enhance the inter-operability of the Army, Air Force and the Marines with an ally.”
According to Caculitan details of the joint exercises are being finalized by the two militaries. In any case, he said, the venues have already been identified: Fort Magsaysay in Nueva Ecija, the Crow Valley Firing Range in Zambales and the Marine Base in Ternate, Cavite.
“It’s a series of Marine amphibious landing and assault exercises, with limited participation of the Navy, Air Force and the Army,” he said. “Of the more than 1,000 Filipino military personnel taking part, 800 will be from the Philippine Marines.”
Likewise, the Philippine Navy and US Navy are set to conduct this month a weeklong joint naval exercise in the former US naval base in Subic Bay and in La Union on August 14 to 21.
According to Caculitan, the naval exercise, called Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training, is designed to test the readiness of the two navies in the fight against terrorism and other transnational crimes.
