Third Olympic talent-search season kicks off
SUBIC-AFTER DISCOVERING MORE that a dozen potential national athletes last year, the 3rd Philippine Olympic Festival continues its search for fresh talents when the Central Northern Luzon qualifying games gets going today in this former United States naval base.
More than a thousand athletes in the region are expected to troop to the Remy Field inside the Subic Bay Freeport Zone where the opening ceremonies will be held beginning with the traditional Olympic torch relay at 4 p.m.
A total of 1,300 athletes from 12 local government units will compete in 20 disciplines starting today with host Olongapo City and Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority fielding in the biggest contingent of 311 athletes.
Philippine Olympic Committee and POF chair Robert Aventajado will lead the opening rites of the week-long event which seeks to discover and train talents for the 2012 London Olympics.
"With the convergence of efforts among the national sports associations, the POC and the local government units, the POF is offering a clear pathway to the London Games," said Aventajado.
Also gracing the affair are POC president Jose "Peping" Cojuangco Jr., Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority chair Feliciano Salonga, Olongapo City mayor James Gordon and International Olympic Committee Philippine representative Frank Elizalde.
Besides Olongapo, defending CNL overall champion Baguio City has also brought a large contingent of 297 athletes in the event supported by Pagcor, Globe, Accel, Ama Computer University, Negros Navigation, Summit Mineral Water and Creativity Lounge.
The City of Pines ruled the CNL qualifying last year in Vigan, Ilocos Sur by beating Pangasinan, La Union and Bulacan by a wide margin in the medal tally. By June Navarro - Philippine Daily Inquirer
