Zambales defers opening of school year for July 14

STA. CRUZ, ZAMBALES — The opening of school classes in the capital, which was ravaged by typhoon Cosme (international code name: Halong), has been deferred for July as local government engineers hasten the rehabilitation of damaged schoolbuildings.

Zambales Governor Amor D. Deloso said the school year will start on July 14 instead of June 10 in the whole of Sta. Cruz district and about half in the adjacent town of Candelaria due to massive destruction brought about by Cosme that hit northwest Luzon in mid-May.

Mr. Deloso issued the instruction to Department of Education division Superintendent Dr. Perlita Basa. "We will try all our best to rebuild the town in 20 days," he said after conducting an inspection and assessment of all affected areas.

He added part of the rehabilitation project is the immediate restoration of electricity in all "interior areas" in the capital (Sta. Cruz) and Candelaria.

Mr. Deloso released P10 million in calamity funds to purchase essential goods for reconstruction activities; the province remains under a state of calamity.

Francis Arcala, provincial engineer, said at least 150 personnel composed mostly of carpenters, masons and allied construction workers have been deployed to undertake repairs.

He added the manpower is complemented by local recruits of the Provincial Social Welfare and Development through the food-for-work program.

Humanitarian aid continues to pour into the typhoon-devastated capital.

Mr. Arcala said personalities and groups from private and public offices and religious organizations have joined with the local government in donating construction materials, food, clothes, or even books and other school supplies, or rendered medical, dental and surgical missions. — Rey Garcia, BusinessWorld
