Gordon to colleagues: Be sober amid mess

SENATOR Richard J. Gordon yesterday called on his colleagues to remain sober amid heated arguments regarding the alleged double budget insertion in the C-5 road extension project.

Gordon said that senators, being members of the senior body of Congress, should behave accordingly by upholding the Senate’s integrity and not being swayed by an outburst of emotions.

“I call on my colleagues in the Senate to recover their sensibilities and sobriety. It was really just a matter of listening to each colleague and making sure that we try to continue our good relations within the Senate,” Gordon said.

“The Senate is usually the senior house. It is a place where we talk about the national interest. It’s actually unparliamentary to accuse one another of wrongdoing especially when what we only want to do is clarify certain questions on whether in fact there was double entry or overpayment,” he added.

Gordon also urged Senate President Manny Villar to come down to the floor and submit himself to questions to, once and for all, clear the air as the issue does not only affect one’s personality but the Senate as a whole.

He said the accusations of double budget insertion actually slurred the Senate’s reputation because it was the same as saying that corruption occurred in the Upper Congress.

“I supported the resolution with other senators to clear the air. And that is why I also ask Senate President Villar to stand up on the floor because he was severely accused by Senator (Panfilo) Lacson,” Gordon said.

“Actually the only thing that needed to be amplified was whether there was indeed a double entry or double payment or somebody made money or whether the right of way benefited him or any other personality so that the air can be cleared insofar as the public is concerned,” he added.

Gordon explained that he signed Senate Resolution 622, which seeks to investigate on the alleged double entry in the budget allocation for the construction of C-5 road, to clear the air and make sure that the Senate is transparent.
