Aquathlon, triathlon get going Sunday

THE NATIONAL aquathlon series will be launched this Sunday, starting with the Speedo-Ateneo Aquathlon at the Ateneo de Manila University campus grounds in Quezon City.

Slated at 6:30 a.m., the event organized by the Loyola Mountaineers will consist of a 2.5K run-1K swim-2.5K run at the grade school swimming pool.

Swim and sports apparel company Speedo has agreed to back this year’s aquathlon series along with the National Age Group Triathlon Series of the Triathlon Association of the Philippines.

“We have always looked at our partnership with triathlon on a long-term basis and we believe the sport continues to grow in terms of number of events and participants every year,” said Speedo EVP Manesh Mathani. “We will always be ready to lend a hand to triathlon, including supporting the national triathlon team.”’

“We expected close to a hundred runners, swim enthusiasts, mountaineers, triathletes, and members of the Ateneo community, including the school’s swimming team to be part of this event,” said event organizer Fabian Mangahas, who can be reached at +63918-4299166. “Part of the proceeds will benefit the Dumagats of Gabaldon as they are beneficiaries of our group.”

The second leg of the Speedo Aquathlon Series is tentatively set in Palaui Island in the northern province of Cagayan in April.

Meanwhile, the 2006 Speedo-National Age Group Triathlon Series, TRAP’s grassroots developmental program, will have its inaugural race on March 12 in Davao City, starting and ending at the Davao Insular Waterfront Hotel.

Organized by Vic Sai with the support of the Triathlon Association of Davao (Triad), this 1K swim-30K bike-7K run distance race is again expected to attract triathletes from all over the Mindanao.

TRAP president Tom Carrasco will be in Davao for the race and the induction of the newly elected Triad officers led by president Alexander Sam and vice president Ernesto Rivera. TRAP will also be donating a split timer to Triad in the event the Davao attracts at least 80 entries, including relay team participants. Other NAGT races set this year include events in Danao City in Cebu, in Alaminos, Pangasinan and at the Clearwater Country Club in Clark Field, Pampanga.
