Smuggled ‘ukay-ukay’ confiscated in Subic

SUBIC BAY Freeport - Task Force Subic and the Bureau of Customs in a joint operation Wednesday morning confiscated imported used clothing worth more than P4 million and an SUV worth around P3 million.

Retired general Jose Calimlim, Task Force Subic head, and Collector Marietta Zamoranos unloaded the imported used clothing popularly known as "ukay-ukay" from five trucks.

The two also presented to the media a top of the line Lincoln Navigator SUV worth around P3 million that was intercepted for having fake documents.

The Navigator, according to Calimlim, came from Honolulu and was unloaded at the Port of Manila but could not be released because of lack of proper documents. The vehicle was then shipped to Subic but documents presented to the Customs office were found to be spurious.

Calimlim said that since the ukay-ukay cannot be auctioned it is likely to be donated to the DSWD. Anthony Bayarong - Manila Times
