End squabbling at SBMA -- Morato
By: Efren Montano - Journal online
“SHIP them out!”
Thus said Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office director Manoling Morato in reaction to the finger-pointing among ranking officials of the Bureau of Customs, Subic Bay Freeport and the Presidential Anti Smuggling Task Force on alleged smuggling at the port.
Various quarters insisted that smuggling continue to be rampant at the SBMA because of the alleged corruption of some ranking government officials.
Morato chairman said that squabbles among top ranking government officials involved in cracking down against smuggled vehicles would be minimized if not eliminated especially, if all hot cars notably the expensive and luxury ones, would be shipped out of the country and sold only to foreign bidders.
Also, Morato urged the President to task the Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board and the Land Transportation Office to prohibit the registration of such contrabands so these could not be used to the advantage of smugglers.
Prohibiting local bidders from auctions of smuggled luxury vehicles, Morato said, would eliminate the chance for smugglers to buy them again.
In the first place, Morato said that authorities should strictly enforce measures in combating smuggling in the country.
Instead of destroying smuggled vehicles, he said, it was better to auction them off so that the proceeds could be used more constructively like donating them to non governmental organizations, as well as for charity and relief work like in typhoon ravaged areas and places where folks have been displaced by conflicts.
