Safety lapses at Hanjin facility in Subic probed

The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) ordered Friday a full scale investigation into the explosion at the shipbuilding site of South Korean Hanjin Heavy Industries Corp that caused the death of two workers and injured four others early in the day.

In a press conference, SBMA administrator Armand Arreza said that the investigation will also look into the occupational health and safety issues inside the shipbuilding facility.

"We've formed a team to look into the occupational health and safety standards at the production facility and if we find any violation of the standards, we will order the closure of the facility," Arreza told reporters.

The incident came a day after the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) team together with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) visited the site to inspect the health and safety of the workers in the production facility.

The DOLE team reportedly gave Hanjin's occupational safety and health program a passing mark.

During the press conference, Arreza admitted the there have been several incidences of work related death at the South Korean facility.

"To be honest, there were two deaths during the last two weeks, one cause by a steel pipe and the other was due to a vehicle-related accident," he said. - John Bayarong, GMANews.TV

  • It is ironic that 2 days before the explosion at hanjin facility, there was a DOLE inspection.. and the Dole gave the company a passing mark on occupational health and safety standards on the working condition at the Hanjin Facility. What the hell they got that passing mark... Why was the Task Force Hanjin who were invited by the SBMA Labor head to join the inspecting team was pulled out of the group by just a phone call to SBMA by Hanjin executive? What is inside the hanjin facility that they want it to sealed with confidentiality to those persons whose only motive is to protect and ensure the safety of workers who happens to be mostly are from the province of Zambales and Olongapo.... Are they afraid that the presence of Task Force Hanjin would negate their passing mark?... to the authorities behind all these mess.. open your eyes to the true situation of our workers inside that $1.6B shipbuilding project.... if you will not open your eyes...another tragic incident would surely explode within our eyes...
