POPULATION AGING SEMINAR IN JAPAN
City Social Welfare and Development (CSWDO) chief Gene Eclarino attended a 9-day seminar on Population Aging from October 26 to November 3, 2008 in Japan sponsored by the Asian Urban Information Center of Kobe (AUICK) for eight (8) Asian Countries. The seminar aims to pass on the best practices of Japan when it comes to taking care of the rights and well being of Senior we Citizens.
“The seminar was given to select Asian countries so that the best practices from Japan on the management and taking care of older persons can be passed on. The participants also presented their programs for the senior citizens in their respective cities to an international advisory committee which evaluated the practices presented,” explained Eclarino.
“The best practice I learned there was giving protection and maintaining the fitness of Senior Citizens mentally and physically. Kasi sa Japan hindi dahil retired ka na ay dapat nasa bahay ka na lang, waiting for your pension,” added Eclarino
“Senior Citizens in Japan remain productive despite their age, their expertise are still used and they are still contributing to the society. They can still enroll in a special college called ‘Silver College’ where they can take courses, trainings and workshops where they can enhance their skills and learn more and be more physically and mentally fit,” said Eclarino.
“Sa atin kasi, kapag retired ka na sa bahay ka na lang pero dapat, you should still be productive and be part of the society and contribute to the development of your community,” Eclarino added
Also discussed during the seminar was the special home care program for Senior Citizens.
“Ang population aging ay binibigyang priority ng city government dahil in the near future, there will be a rapid rise in the older population and the government is already preparing and laying out plans to overcome this challenge. Kailangan palakasin pa natin yung family care program dahil ang mga Filipino ay family oriented at dapat pamilya ang mag-aalaga sa mga Senior Citizens” explained Eclarino.
Eclarino thanked Mayor James ‘Bong’ Gordon Jr. for the opportunity to attend the seminar.
“This has been a very fruitful seminar for me, lalo na ang CSWDO ang direct primary agency taking care and promoting the rights of our Senior Citizens and I thank Mayor Gordon for this opportunity,” concluded Eclarino.
Participating countries included Vietnam, Indonesia, India, Pakistan at Thailand. Eclarino is the only Philippine representative to the seminar.
