DOST SETUP benefits 3 Zambales firms

Zambales -- Three companies in Zambales were beneficiaries of the Small Enterprises Upgrading Program or SET UP of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
The program aims to assist small and medium sized companies to implement technological innovatios and improvements in their operations.
The Green Thumb Agri Products in Lauis, Candelaria acquired a dual-type mechanical dryer which uses LPG and electricity as fuel. Although the primary product of the company is dried mango, the owner processed other fruits like tamarind, camias, papaya, and condol to maximize the use of the dyer. To cope with the demand for processed fruits which they encountered, they hired five additional workers.
Zambrox Corporation in Iba produced some 6000 pieces assorted stone products such as accessories, candleholders, clocks, trophies, frames and key chains from October to December last year. To date, it has purchased and installed 14 units of processing equipment worth P600,000. Five workers were trained on stone cutting, beading and polishing.
Early this year, DOST provided the funds for the fabrication of a sesame molder and sesame de-huller. Because of this innovation, Sonia's Sweets was able to produce 11,707 packs of sesame candy worth P 234,000 from July to November. Sesame candy making in Mambog, Botolan, was modernized because of the acquisition of these machines.
DOST Officer Didith MOntevirgen said that SET UP will support and sustain the competitiveness and development of the small manufacturing sector. (PIA Zambales)
