Arroyo to witness wrecking of smuggled cars in Subic

MANILA, Philippines -- If the weather allows, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will go to the Subic Bay Freeport on Thursday to witness the destroying of the smuggled luxury cars, Presidential Management Staff Chief Cerge Remonde said.

Remonde said the crushing of the smuggled vehicles at the Freeport’s impounding area will proceed as ordered by Arroyo to show the government's determination to curb smuggling.

Arroyo stood pat on her order despite proposals to auction the vehicles and use the money for government projects.

Remonde said there is no legal impediment to the destruction of the vehicles as these were illegally shipped into the country.
