Lawmaker vows to support car smuggling probe
Bacolod City Rep. Monico Puentevella on Wednesday vowed to support any investigation on the reported rampant smuggling of luxury cars in the country.
Puentevella, chair of the House Committee on Transportation, said it is high time to put an end to the corrupt practices of some Bureau of Customs (BOC) personnel, who were allegedly involved in the smuggling and release of luxury cars.
"It's time the culprits in the BoC, who are involved in the smuggling and release of luxury cars, are identified so government can punish them and end their corrupt practices," he said.
The Presidential Anti-Smuggling Group (PASG), headed by Antonio Villar, disclosed that some 500 smuggled luxury vehicles were released in various ports in the country by the BoC without paying the correct duties and taxes that could run to billions of pesos.
Puentevella described Villar's disclosure as alarming as car smuggling is reportedly rampant in various ports, particularly in the ports of Subic and Cebu.
"We should support the PASG's campaign against the smuggling of luxury vehicles which is in line with the Arroyo administration's campaign against graft and for an enhanced tax collection," he added.
Puentevella also said that he had filed House Bill 2058 seeking to consider any form of smuggling as economic sabotage.
"Whether it was actual or technical smuggling, it should be punishable by life imprisonment," he added. (PNA)
