On-Target
By Ramon Tulfo - Inquirer
When an unexpected disaster strikes your home, like a member of the family having a stroke, what do you do?
You would know all the necessary steps to take before rushing your victim to the nearest hospital if you studied first aid at the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC).
Sept. 8, Saturday, is World First Aid Day. The rest of the month is National First Aid Month.
Your knowledge of first aid will come in handy when you stumble upon a disaster and victims need immediate medical attention to survive.
If you’re interested in learning first aid, call up telephone number 527-0000, local 128 or 129, or 527-9979, if you’re in Manila.
You can inquire from your local Red Cross chapter if you’re outside Manila.

Sen. Dick Gordon, PNRC chair, has set an ambitious goal: Having at least one member of every household learn first aid and know what to do in case of calamity.
That’s one in every four persons (assuming there are four members in every family) being a Red Cross volunteer.
If you think that goal is unattainable, you don’t know Dick Gordon.
As first chair of the government agency that runs the Subic Freeport, Gordon was able to convince his constituents in Olongapo City and Zambales to work as volunteers without pay until the Freeport became self-sufficient.
