Zambales cops kill hostage taker of 3-yr-old

By Tonette Orejas - Inquirer Central Luzon Desk

OLONGAPO CITY, Philippines -- Policemen shot and killed a man who took a three-year-old girl hostage in his house in San Antonio, Zambales Monday.

Police reports said Joji Apostol had barged into a store in Barangay (village) Rizal at about 2:30 p.m. but rushed back to his home after storeowner Willy Bartolo shot him in the shoulder.

Apostol, who was armed with a knife, saw Beverly Ramos, 3, who was in the care of his mother in their house, and took her hostage.

The suspect, according to the reports, then stabbed and wounded Ramos.

When policemen tried to persuade Apostol to surrender, he tried to stab a policeman identified only as Senior Police Officer 1 Sosa, forcing the latter to shoot him.

Police took Ramos to a hospital in San Marcelino town for treatment.
